September - December 2008
Programme of Events and Exhibitions
Welcome
The Hip, within Neo's, is an artist-led space situated in Market Place, Cockermouth, Cumbria.
It is one of four independent galleries situated on or 'over the bridge’ which spans the River Cocker, and is the fledgling, opening in May 2004 to become the latest addition to the hub of creativity in this part of town.
Throughout September 2008: Landscape Paintings by Robert Newton
Robert Newton, a young British artist, lives and paints in Northumberland. I came across his work late last year by way of recommendation from a collector (who has excellent taste since he is also a fan of Derek Eland's paintings!)
After further investigation - at the excellent Pinfold Gallery in Bowness - and having seen a Robert Newton canvas purchased by that collector, I was smitten, and delighted when he agreed to have an exhibition here at The Hip.
For myself, closer-up they have the look of a dramatic, gestural oil painting, executed in an impasto-style. From further away they still look dramatic (those skies!) yet recognisable now as a somehow familiar, painterly landscape, not too far away from here. I knew right away I would not tire of looking at these paintings, and that I would like to own one of them myself one day.
His own website - www.robnewton.co.uk - succinctly defines his work:
' .... Never afraid to use colour, Robert's work explores both composition and expression; yet always maintains the painterly approach he pays most attention to. Robert sees his work as painting nature not only in context but as a vehicle to express the medium, its plasticity and how it conveys an illusion of reality.'
