The Dice Cup

£6.00

Max Jacob (trans. Chris Pilling & David Kennedy)

Shortlisted for the Weidenfeld Translation Prize

The startling originality, wit and pleasure of The Dice Cup depends, to a large extent, on a heightened, at times hallucinatory, awareness of other possible worlds.

In 'A Double Life' a flock of doves turns out to be a shower of leaflets – or is it the other way round? – and in 'Fantomas' an elaborately chased silver door knocker comes momentarily to life in the distorting lens of the poem ….

Similarly, many of the poems in The Dice Cup draw on Jacob’s ‘other lives:’ as art critic, dyed-in-the-wool native of Brittany, assistant in a department store, visionary, society fortune-teller.

The Translators
To read Jacob is to be continually reminded that ‘reality’ is merely the place where each of us lives as the result of a complex network of choices that could have been made otherwise.
